Moving... January 6, 2003 - 3:44 PM

I'm moving to Montreal. I'm trying to find an apartment right now and not having much in the way of luck. It's a bummer. So if you are reading this and have an apartment to rent in Montreal, you should let me know. Or if you know anyone who wants to hire a programmer...

Ok, I know there are only about 7 of you reading this. So I'm not expecting miracles. But one should try, no?

Bloody Hell, I'm Slacking! February 22, 2003 - 3:32 PM

Right. So I'm a completely lazy bastard, having not updated my site in a month and a half. I ought to be ashamed of me. Anyway, I went back to Calgary for a week. I had an outstanding time (thanks to the ShugahShack and the CPSC gang). It was hard to leave. Despite all the bitching I did over the years, I enjoyed living in Calgary. I miss them folks.

So I got back to Montreal, January 20th-ish. I was sick. I spread my sickness. Then I got sicker. Bronchitis, in fact, and on one nasty night a fever of 39.8 C. I was somewhat delerious, which was a treat. We went to emergency, but my fever broke during the FIVE HOUR WAIT to see a doctor. So we went home. I was given a mandate, to stay in bed until I was fixed. So I did.

Then I spent a week or so futzing around, not really doing anything. I sort of set up my apartment, sort of moved into it, etc. Things looked bleak. But eventually I was prodded to actually live there. So now I am.

I've never moved across the country all by myself before. I learned some things. Like to not buy the cheapest futon you can find. The frame will undoubtedly be warped beyond repair. And the mattress will smell kinda like wet paint. Also, never ship all your personal effects with Fedex ground to Montreal. Because they are going to screw up the delivery and send some of your boxes back to Calgary, then take next-to-forever to track everything down and actually deliver it to the right address. Of course, you can't go pick it up at the Montreal World Shipping Center, because the Montreal World Shipping Center isn't actually in Montreal. It's 5 BLOODY HOURS outside of Montreal. Convenient, no?

I still don't have a job. Not that I've done a lot of looking yet. I sent out a batch of resumes on Monster.ca one day, and got two callbacks. I lost the number for one of them (oops) and the other was an internet gambling company. They advertised as an 'online multiplayer gaming company'. Gaming. I was thinking Everquest-like stuff. Apparently not.

Anyway, now I have an apartment and internet and a phone and a bed. And some other stuff, you know, for cooking. And bathing. It's good. No couch yet, so if you were planning on crashing here, hold off until I get a job. Couches are fscking expensive. Who has money for couches? Not me.

Oh. I need a job, in Montreal. Like, ASAP. I'm still working on my resumes, but the one that focuses on my sort of web / general programming skills (and is less focused on all that crazy graphics stuff) can be found right here. If you can give it to someone who might want to consider hiring me, I would be extremely appreciative.

(And start emailing me at rms@unknownroad.com, cuz who knows when they'll shut off my CPSC account.)

Debacles February 26, 2003 - 3:40 PM

I have mold. I'm molding. MOLDING!

Well, not me, but my apartment. A few days after I moved in, I noticed a drip from the bathroom ceiling, above the shower. It continued dripping. Then a funny, musty smell started coming from the closet in the front entrance (the back wall of which is shared with the bathroom wall the shower head is on). On closer inspection, it became apparent that there was GODDAMN MOLD growing out of the walls in the closet. I didn't really notice it when I checked the place out, because it had been PAINTED OVER. So someone knew about it. !!!@$$%&!!@! (I'm trying not to swear too much, in case potential employers take a look at my site).

I let the landlord know about the drip, but I haven't been around my place all that much the last few days. The drip is fixed but I haven't talked to anyone about the mold. MOLD! It could be toxic. There is a very small chance that it will be fixed. That would require replacement of a lot of wall area. More likely, I will have to either live with MOLD, or move. So I might be moving soon. Huzzah.

Other debacle: Videotron (Montreal cable ISP) wants me to pay them $300 for a cable model and installation. Except I didn't request an installation, or a cable modem, or Videotron's cable service. I have Sympatico DSL. WTF!??!?!?! Luckily, Videotron customer service is French-only, so I can't even call them up to ask about it.

MOLD! BLOODY MOLD! And still no job. And I saw a TERRIBLE movie called 'Derrida'. It's about the philosopher who invented deconstructivism. DO NOT GO SEE IT. EVER.

Is anything good? Yes. Maple syrup is good.
